All Oil Spills Are Different

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/08/140808111923.htm

The summary of the issue found in this article is oil spills and how the oil reacts and changes in its new environment. No oils spills are the same and their effect on the environment depend on particular "external factors." These factors include the amount and speed of the wind and waves and also the temperature of the objects the oil is touching (the water and air.) The main issue is that oil spills effect humans and animals in a negative way. The article states that measures are being taken to clean the spills as quick as possible and make plans for the emergency response. A barrier to the problem is that drilling for oil is unavoidable in our society and spills are unfortunately inevitable. My opinion is that these spills should somehow be avoided because of their major impact on sea life and even people's lives. I feel like huge spills should never have happened in the first place and oil companies should make it their priority to elude them at all costs.

  1. Hey Abby! I thought it was really interesting that the severity of each oil spill depends on outside factors like weather and temperature. I didn't know that! I also agree with your barrier. Unfortunately, as long as offshore drilling is a part of our society (which it will be until we either run out of oil or find another renewable and more eco-friendly resource) oil spills will continue happening and most likely become more and more drastic and catastrophic.

  2. This is a very interesting article. I remember hearing about the BP oil spill that took place in the Gulf of Mexico a couple of years ago. I remember that the amount of oil spilled was so great that some beaches in Alabama were closed for the entire summer. I also know that scientists were very concerned about the environmental impacts, especially on wildlife. I was wondering if this article had any specifics on the amount of damage that was actually done by this spill or by spills in all? Another question for anyone is how common are oil spills? Are they regularly occurring events or are they very rare? I agree with your statement that we need to find a way to stop oil spills because of their extreme effect on both humans and other wildlife. If factors are right oil spills can effect an endless number of people and other animals.
