Mind-Bending Earth GIFs

A variety of problems were addressed in this video; GIFs depicting how the world’s landscape has been altered over the last twenty five years showed problems such as,  the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest in Bolivia and Brazil, mountain top removal mining in West Virginia, the clear cutting in areas such as around St. Helens, as well as the consumption of water. The consumption of fresh water and how that affects the landscape was shown through the irrigation in Dubai and Las Vegas, as well as showing images of Lake Urmia in Iran drying up due to either drought or irrigation.

Hank Green explains that the root of all these problems is people not being able to see the damage that they cause to the environment; that facts and figures do little to impress the huge negative impact people cause to the environment. The solution would then be to educate people on the importance of taking care of the environment and taking personal responsibility for its preservation through visuals like these GIFs, or before and after photos. The barrier to this solution is that protecting the environment has to be an individual’s decision and it is a challenge to impress the importance of taking steps to preserve the environment on most people; another obstacle is getting these terrifying images out to a wide enough audience to spark an environmental movement.

I personally think this new technology help me grasp the extent to which humankind has altered the earth and has destroyed many resources; I think the solution of using this technology to show people the effect of human’s have on the environment is genius because it destroys many of the barriers that facts and figures present when explaining the environmental crisis to the public.

  1. After watching the videos, I was also surprised to see how much the world's landscape has changed in the last 25 years. Too often, people (developers) tear down trees and destroy the natural environment for their own benefit. The human footprint is expanding more and more every day. We can see this in our own area. I think these GIF's should be shown in schools and even in town planning meetings. If more people could see the destruction that is being caused to our planet then maybe they would think twice before they proceed.
