Shallow fracking raises questions

The United States almost produces the same amount of crude oil as Saudi Arabia. Fracking is a popular way to retrieve oil. It is a mining process using a cracking mixture of pressurized water, sand, and chemicals. Fracking is harmful to the environment. It pollutes the clean water sources and contaminates them to the point that we can no longer use it. Stanford is doing research to find a way to protect drinking water from the effects of fracking. Fracking is only safe for the water when it is 1,000 feet to a mile underground.  Studies from Environmental Science & Technology show recorded fracking done as little as 100 feet underground, putting the water source at risk. A solution to this problem is to stop fracking all together. We have other resources that we can use to make a profit from. It's not worth putting a clean water source at risk to make a profit. A barrier to this solution is that people care so much about money that they'd do almost anything for it. Fracking isn't going to stop as long as their is a demand for crude oil. People are so wrapped up in making money that they put the environment at risk. If we keep treating the planet like this, there won't be anything left.

  1. I also wrote a blog on this topics. I agree with you that Fracking isn't going to stop as long as there is a need for crude oil. Fracking is one of the only processes that can make that. I personally feel that Fracking is the only way because the United States probably would not want to fund the alternative isotopic tracer method, because cutting corners at the expense of the future for profit is typical of our country. Also, many people are probably not aware of this issue, making it difficult to find more solutions. I feel that another solution could be to find more sustainable sources of energy other than fossil fuels which have to be mined, and then we can get rid of the global warming issue. I do agree with you that people are wrapped up in the making money that they are putting their environment at risk. Maybe if people know of this issue, they will make a change because of not, the earth will shrivel up and will be nothing.

  2. I think that fracking should be moved deeper or they need to find a way to eliminate the need of it all together. If pollution is where it can get inside of the drinking water there is a problem. In the world there is a lot of water but only so much of we as humans can drink. We need to protect the water we have available to drink.
