Federal Agency Approves Shell Oil Co.'s Drilling Plan

Shell Oil Company is now one step closer to drilling for oil in the arctic. The U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Enforcement and Regulation, otherwise known as BOEMRE, approved a plan that could have drilling off the coast of Alaska as soon as 2012. First, Shell must secure drilling, air quality, and other permits before they can begin. While many conservationists do not and will not approve of this notion, believing it goes against President Obama's "promises of reform" after the highly publicized Gulf spills of 2010, BOEMRE is still reviewing the plans and will do everything possible to ensure that this action, if passed, will be as enviromentally friendly as possible. Personally, I support the drilling plan off of Alaska wholeheartedly, provided it passes the scrutiny of BOEMRE. With the country in such an economical rut, in only makes sense that we should begin drilling for our own oil opposed to relying on foreign countries.

  1. I think it’s important that we stray from foreign oil. With this we can depend on our own oil and it won’t to go very far from the ocean to land which reduces the chance of an oil spill happening. I think it should be applauded all the things that Shell must obtain before they start though, we are finally taking responsibility for incidents in the past and we learn from them. Hopefully BOEMRE can keep a tight check on all of this to make sure that another oil spill doesn’t threaten the Alaskan wildlife that has been through enough oil spills in the past.
