New Light Bulbs are Promising for LED Future

General Electric has released newer and brighter version of the already popular energy efficient LED light bulbs. These new LED models are comparable in brightness and appearance to typical 60W, 75W, and 100W incandescent bulbs but for a fraction of the energy costs. The 60W equivalent will only take 13W, the 75W equivalent will only take 18W and the 100W will only take 27W. When one typically thinks of energy saving measures, light bulbs don’t come to mind, but if one were to actually calculate the amount of electricity spent of lighting per year it would be on the forefront of personal home energy saving concerns. These new bulbs eliminate the former aversion people had to purchasing them by increasing brightness. The bulbs prior to the new models were already longer lasting and energy efficient. The only barrier I see to the average consumer purchasing these new light bulbs would be the initial off-the-shelf cost, but these bulbs pay for themselves when compared to traditional incandescent in the long run due to energy cost savings.

  1. Maybe if General Electric educated the public on the average energy cost savings vs the off-the-shelf cost, more consumers would look into purchasing the new light bulb.

  2. If General Electric were to advertise a comparison over time that shows that these new light bulbs would save more money in the long run than the off-the-shelf price, they could probably get much business while consumers become more energy-efficient. If this information would reach the average customer, I’m sure there would be a resurgence in sales for these new LED light bulbs. Imagine how much energy we could all save even if it was something like one person out of ten that did this it would be a wake-up call to many wallets which in the end, is what many people strive to do.
