In Brazil there has been major deforestation causing many of the bigger species of birds to leave. This has caused the trees to produce smaller weaker seeds that have a lower percentage of surviving. The smaller seeds being produced have caused the current trees to produce less trees adding to the problems caused by deforestation. If deforestation is reduced and amazon is returned to its original size many problems dealing with the amazon will be solved such as: endangered species, buildup of carbon gases, and trees giving off weaker seeds. Problems involving this solution are that most of the land has been deprived of its nutrients due to excessive farming, most all of the land is owned by separate land owners, the cost of doing this would be outrageously expensive. I feel that if something is not done about this than we are only hurting ourselves because in the long run we will run out of essential resources such as fresh water, clean oxygen, animals and plants for food, and wood for shelter. If something is not done now there won’t be a future to fix it later. http://www.bbc.co.uk

  1. Laird I agree completely. Deforestation is problematic in several countries around the world. Forests are being destroyed for farming, but what people don’t realize is that they are destroying resources we could use instead of wasting them. Even if it might be expensive to repair the amazon I believe it is a necessity to fix this problem. Many species of plants and animals are disappearing because of deforestation. Ecosystems are being destroyed causing animals to relocate or starve. Should deforestation not be stopped? Although farming is essential for our world’s population animals do not need to be destroyed in the process. A more eco-friendly plan should be made in efforts to save the amazon and the organisms living there.

  2. Fixing the Amazon is very important. I agree with you Patrick that finding a way to protect the animals of the Amazon and the Amazon itself is important. The Amazon is the largest rainforest on earth and the size is dwindling. The effects of deforestation can end up being worse than we expected. There are a vast amount of resources in this rainforest. If it is not protected and repaired then we would be losing valuable resources. Although, the resources are important, the health of the Amazon is far more important. As you said Patrick, “Forests are being destroyed for farming…” , which is true and the world needs the produce but, is destroying large portions of the Amazon really what should be done? I do not believe that everyone understands the major effects upon the world if this forest is completely destroyed. An eco-friendly alternative is possible and should be implemented but, that will most likely only work if the countries that occupy parts of the Amazon are willing to protect it.

  3. Laird, I too believe that something should be done about the deforestation problem immediately. Deforestation is a worldwide problem that needs to be stopped as soon as possible. Deforestation causes many ecosystems to fail and very vital human resources to banish. Many unknown herbs and plants are in the amazon and could be used in the medical field. Deforestation causes many essential resources to be wasted or destroyed and we will eventually run out. The world needs to stand up against the deforestation and help the amazon heal and grow. No one will know what will happen in the future and something does need to be done right away before it is too late.
