Pest Threating To Eat Citrus Growers Out Of House and Home

For states like California and Florida who are involved in the citrus growing industries the Asian citrus psyllid is unwanted organism that can be deadly to their economic growth.   The Asian citrus psyllid makes it impossible for citrus growers to sell their crops because it turns the citrus green and makes it taste bad because the organism implants a virus in the citrus trees.  Scientist started out trying to us pesticides to kill off the unwanted visitors but was afraid that too much pesticide would harm the environment.  So they turned to the tamarixia wasp which is a parasite that would eventually kill the Asian citrus psyllid organically.  So far there has been success with using tamarixia wasps. In my opinion I think that using wasps to kill of the Asian citrus psyllid is just nature taking its course.  We shouldn’t have to use pesticides that are unnatural and disturbed nature and don’t even give us are intended effect.

  1. I think this is a great example of how environmental problems all around the world can be solved using natural and “green” ways. By not using pesticides, citrus fruits were saved the harsh chemicals and remedied from the Citrus Psyllid. What I was curious about though was the Psylid’s need for the citrus fruits specifically. Does it use the fruits as a needed food source or do citruses just serve as a viable place for the organism to grow? Also, do you think pesticides that take care of environmental problems are still bad if they benefit the overall goal or, as you said, are all pesticides unhealthy and” don’t even give us are intended effect”?

  2. This is a great way to solve the problem. The solution uses the environment itself to cure the problem. The solution doesn't ask for any unnatural substances or harmful chemicals to be made, it just simply uses the environment. I agree with the comment above, as well. This is a perfect example of how problems with the environment can be resolved in an environment friendly way.
