New Jersey Erosion

Many years ago houses were being built on the New Jersey coast line. The sand dunes that protect the beaches were removed to provide a better view of the ocean. About four years ago people who lived on the coast of New Jersey fought to rebuild the sand dunes that were once removed. There was a 25 million dollar project to reconstruct the dunes that use to protect the shore from the water’s strength. After many battles the project was under way. It was not soon enough.  Hurricane Sandy swooped in and brought devastating winds and harsh water. The damage was devastating; however, houses on the coast that had the sand dunes rebuilt suffered much less than the ones that had no sand dunes to protect the houses from the ferocious water. After Hurricane Sandy a new idea has been uncovered. The new plan is to pay 375,000 dollars to rebuild the view and not the sand dunes. This would be a much cheaper and quicker fix.  If the reconstruction of the dunes is completed, I believe that the beach will no longer be swept into the sea.  For this solution to work, all residents must agree and the government must be willing to pay for the 25 million dollar project. In my opinion the plan will work but it relies solely on the government to be willing to pay for the project and not to take the cheaper way out.

  1. I think that, in theory, this is a very good idea and could be well worth the money required to complete this project. If the reconstruction of sand dunes COULD prevent the beach from being swept into the ocean it would be the best way to go instead of implementing "quick fixes" every couple of years. I think this should be one of those projects where only the people that want to see it done have to pay for it. So the people of New Jersey should take a poll and whoever says they want to reconstruct the sand dunes should be the ones who pay for it. This would be a highly expensive thing to do, but if enough people want to see it done the bill could shrink significantly if divided up among enough people.

  2. I feel really bad for the people affected by hurricane sandy. I a lot of people lost everything in that unexpected turn of events. I think that if there is a possible solution to better protect that area from being totally destroyed then it is worth a look at. Hopefully the government will go for putting the money to do what is necessary to avoid that devastation again. I don’t think that the people in coast of NJ would apposed this solution because they would be better protected against hurricanes and will not be left for a long time waiting for the project to be completed. I hope the country in general will reach out by donating money to help with the project. We cannot fix anything unless everyone is involved and supporting each other.
